Sinta Phenolic Fiberglass Grating is approved by U.S. Coast Guard by surpassing both level 2 and level 3 tests. The USCG test requires sample grating to be exposed to 1700℉ (927℃) for one hour as per ASTM E-119. The sample that we supplied carried 140 psf uniformed load during the test, exceeding the requirement of 94 psf by a factor of 1.49.

What is the USCG Test?

USCG phenolic gratings are not specifically addressed in the individual vessel regulations. However, the resins typically used in the manufacture of these gratings are combustible and heat sensitive; therefore, FRP and phenolic gratings use must be limited based on the requirements discussed below.

These requirements are not intended to eliminate any other design criteria or requirement pertaining to the material, construction, or performance of the FRP gratings in the non-fire condition.

Level 1 (L1): FRP gratings meeting the L1 performance criteria are intended to be satisfactory for use in escape routes or access for firefighting, emergency operation or rescue, after having been exposed to a significant hydrocarbon or cellulosic fire incident. In addition, they are also acceptable for the services and functions described for levels L2 and L3.

What’s Included in L1? – Machinery spaces and service spaces dominate the L1 fire integrity requirements. Walkways and areas used for escape plus those that provide access for emergency movement and equipment are the most common L1 required spaces. This can include cargo pump rooms and cargo holds that have a wide variety of walkways. Essentially any area where there is a catwalk and personnel would need to access at any point when the vessel is underway, a grating of L1 is required.

Level 2 (L2): FRP gratings meeting the L2 performance criteria are intended to be satisfactory for use in open deck areas where groups of people are likely to assemble such as temporary safe refuge or lifeboat embarkation areas. In addition, they are also acceptable for the services and functions described for level L3.

What’s Included in L2? – The L2 requirement is typically restricted to open deck areas around the lifeboats as well as temporary shelter areas when bringing people aboard. The L2 integrity requirement covers walkways, catwalks, ladders, platforms and other access points. The L2 requirement can also be extended to areas that are near to shelter areas if they are used for quick access by emergency responders or firefighting personnel.

Level 3 (L3): FRP gratings meeting the L3 performance criteria are intended to be satisfactory for use in egress routes and any areas that may require access for firefighting, rescue or emergency operations during exposure to or shortly after exposure to a transitory hydrocarbon or cellulosic fire.

What’s Included in L3? – The L3 integrity designation is often used in areas where L1 would normally apply but there is a risk of exposure to harsher chemicals. In many instances where L1 designation would seem appropriate, the L3 designation will be used if machinery spaces do not contain any combustion machinery or oil heat, pumping, burning and other uses. Semi-enclosed decks that are not fitted with foam firefighting systems will also have an L3 integrity requirement.
